A friend recently sent me a link to a discussion about folks who use radar detectors and laser jammers.
The question posed a simple question: Are drivers who utilize radar and laser detectors better drivers than those folks who do not?
The response was overwhelmingly yes. Granted it was surveyed on a radar detector forum, but nonetheless, very valid and logic responses were offered, including:
- [W]e give more attention on the road than normal drivers. [B]ecause we are always looking out for hiding spots(cops) and are totally focused unlike other drivers
- I [am] considerably conscious of everything going on around me on the road; especially when I’m running my RD. I’m constantly checking mirrors, looking ahead, and paying attention to the traffic pattern. I see [some]thing developing and I’m able to anticipate [it]. … The reality is that the average driver is paying just enough attention to keep the car on the road. They are steering, not DRIVING.
- Overall though I think people with RD[s] (with a few exceptions) drive better because they are paying attention to the road and on the look out for the cops.
I think there is logic to all of these arguments.
Drivers with radar detectors and laser jammers tend to be on the look-out for police and are more actively monitoring traffic patterns and the sides of the road looking for potential law enforcement. As a result, they are much more likely to see a potential dangerous situation before a more passive driver that is simply steering their automobile.
Radar detectors do not make bad drivers, wrecklessness and a lack of attention does.
