Pew recently released a news IQ quiz to assess the public’s knowledge of the world and the country we live in.
Below are the questions asked, and percentage of adults who got each question correct:
- Who is the newest justice to join the Supreme Court? (65)
- Who is Glenn Beck? (40)
- Which political party has a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives? (75)
- What does the so-called “public option” legislation being discussed in Congress deal with? (56)
- Who is the chairman of the Senate finance committee? (18)
- Who is the chairman of the Fed? (33)
- Does Iran and Israel share a border? (42)
- What is the national unemployment rate? (53)
- What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average? (33)
- Is health care spending in the U.S. higher, lower or about the same as in most major European nations? (61)
- What does the so-called “cap and trade” legislation being discussed in Congress deal with? (23)
- Approximately how many U.S. military personnel are currently in Afghanistan? (28)
How well do you think you would do?
I took the quiz, but didn’t get a perfect score because I got the final question wrong – but still did better than 92 percent of Americans, according to the survey.

I did as well as you did, got the same question wrong. I don’t feel good that I’m in the top 5%…more people should know these things.
I got the 12 right, but I wasn’t positive on the last question. I’m with 2 percent of the population. That makes me sad, especially as a journalist who tries to spread the information that people don’t seem to be taking in.
Trudi and I are together in the 2%. But unlike her, I enjoy being in an exclusive club.
